Greg’s TEFL Story: From UK Grey to Thai Sunrays

September 24, 2023

In the bustling heart of London, surrounded by its iconic red buses, historic landmarks, and the ever-present patter of rain, I began to feel the familiar itch of wanderlust. The vast world outside seemed to beckon, promising adventures and stories yet untold. A chance conversation over coffee introduced me to the realm of TEFL. Eager for a change and the opportunity to travel, I plunged into a Level 3 TEFL course. To my surprise, within a mere four weeks, I had not only grasped the basics but was buzzing with excitement for my next big leap – moving to Thailand.

Initially, my venture into TEFL was driven by the desire to fund my travels. But as weeks turned into months, it became so much more than a paycheck. The classroom turned into a melting pot of cultures, allowing me to form bonds with students and fellow teachers from all walks of life. Weekend trips with colleagues, celebrating local festivals with students, and even being invited into their homes gave me a unique insight into Thai culture and life.

Diving into Thai Culture: Beyond the Golden Temples

Bangkok’s Vibrant Streets:

My first steps in Bangkok were met with a symphony of sounds. Tuk-tuks buzzing past, street vendors calling out their wares, and the distant chime of temple bells. The city was an overwhelming yet exciting blend of the old and new, and every corner held a surprise.

The Classroom Experience:

Walking into my first Thai classroom was a mix of excitement and nervousness. The students, with their eager faces, looked up at me expectantly. The initial challenges were evident: the language barrier, cultural nuances, and different learning styles. But each challenge was met with a triumph. The joy of a student finally grasping a difficult concept, the pride in their eyes during a well-delivered presentation, and their infectious enthusiasm made every hurdle worth it.

During my first week, I struggled to remember the unique names of my students. I thought I was finally getting a hang of it when I kept hearing them refer to one of the girls as “Nong.” I’d address her as such, only to receive giggles from the class. It wasn’t until later that I realized “Nong” is a common prefix in Thai culture, used to address someone younger. The students were calling her “younger sister,” not by her actual name! It was both an embarrassing and enlightening moment for me, showcasing the cultural nuances embedded in everyday language.

Teaching the differences between British and American English led to some hilarious moments. During a lesson on vocabulary variations, like ‘pants’ versus ‘trousers’, ‘boot’ versus ‘trunk’, a playful debate ensued about which sounded better.

Savoring Local Delights:

Outside the confines of the classroom, Thailand had much more to offer. From savoring spicy Pad Thai in a local eatery to joining the locals in the traditional Loi Krathong festival, every experience added depth to my understanding of the Thai way of life. Not to mention, the occasional weekend trips to serene beaches like Koh Samui rejuvenated me for the week ahead.

Building Connections:

Perhaps the most valuable aspect of my journey was the connections I made. My colleagues at the school, who started as strangers, became my Thai family, guiding me through the intricacies of Thai etiquette and customs. My students, with their genuine curiosity about the world, taught me as much as I taught them.

Reflecting on a Journey of Growth

As my time in Thailand came to a close, I took a moment to reflect on the journey. It wasn’t just about teaching English; it was about immersing myself in a culture so different from mine and yet finding common ground. It was about the moments of understanding, the shared laughter, and the realization that, at the end of the day, we’re all not so different after all. This adventure, with all its ups and downs, has enriched me in ways I could never have imagined, making me not just a better teacher, but a more empathetic global citizen.
